Readers’ Comments on the Halal Ingredients Report
Comment No. 1 From Shameem Al-Fathima on 8 September 2007 on 5 September
Wa Alaikum Salam,
Sorry for my late reply.. I was held up with my work.
I went through ur halal ingredients report. Alhamdulillah it shows ur effort put in to get all the details. It was really very much elaborate and Insha Allah will be useful too.
As u have mentioned, much of the products are for UK, some products like Cadbury's, Mars, Nestle and coke products are available here in India too. In case, if i come across any other products mentioned, will be much helpful for me to know if it is halal or not.
Jazakallah for the report.
Wassalam
Shameem.
Comment No. 2 From N. Mohd Ali on 5 September 2007 Assalaamu'alaikum MasyaAllah, you have done much legwork here. Thank you for sharing this. As requested, feedback as follows: 1. See if the formatting can be revised for ease of reading -- perhaps a document with numbered pages and sections. 2. The actual letters/news articles could be scanned and attached separately under Appendix. 3. One font and up to 2 colours could be easier on the eye. 4. All paragraphs/columns could be kept flushed to the left. 5. The following info could be given upfront: "This HALAL INGREDIENTS REPORT is mainly of relevance to the United Kingdom . However, this is not to say that it will not be relevant to readers in other countries (Coca Cola, for example, is sold universally). Also, this report will be of value for a limited time, a number of months, for instance. Formulae of consumer foodstuffs are constantly changing, as manufacturers such as Walkers take care to point out, so the purchaser should always read the ingredients or look out for the ‘V’ for approved by the Vegetarian Society sign. Also, there are thousands of companies manufacturing foodstuffs, so this Report can contain details from no more than a nominal handful. If readers in other countries are interested in producing a ‘Halal Ingredients Report of their own, then I will be happy to assist in any way possible, to compile the Report with technical accuracy, as well as making it pleasing to the eye." Hope this helps. barakAllah fik Comment No. 3 From Amliya Saeed on 3 September 2007

Dr Umar bhai,
Grovelling apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
I found the information very easy to understand and it will be highly effective when used as a quick reference guide, especially withe the popular lines of products that we consume in the UK. May Allah continue to shower you with the ability to share knowledge with us all.
I just wanted you to note the taweez that I have printed are blurred can you do anything for me?- and I wish to know what I need to write anything before wearing them - If you could please expand on the rules about this.
please remember me in your prayers
many thanks

Comment No. 8 From Ayesha Ameer on 24 August 2007 Assalam alaikum Dr. Umar,
Thank you for the copy of the halal ingredients reports. I have read it to the very end and I don't have any comments to make on it. I think the report is self-explanatory. I cannot comment on the company's notes either since they know the ingredients they use better than me. To be explicit, i don't know the kind of comments you want.
King regards.

In Allah’s hifz-o-aman, we all are in the best of ourselves & hope you all to be the same – Inshallah.
First of all very very sorry for not responding u since then, coz of busyness in routine life. And speaking honestly cudn’t even find time to go through the Report as whole.
I had got Halal Ingredients Report by that date and even saved it on hard disk for studying. That is ‘A MUST’ for me and for all those muslims in India and outside, who are unknowingly consuming such products.
I am really really thankful to you for your concern and remind me for the matter.
Hope to get more such things from your side which will be helpful, in future also.
Keep in Duas.

I also refered some to experts in the field for their close study and comment.

I was quite pleased with you listing of halaal ingredients, however, I live in the US so many of the items I have never heard of. Also, because you are asking my honest input, I would like to graciously tell you it could be more organized. It was hard to read with all the different fonts and colors. I really appreciated your efforts of sending me the list. Jazakum Allah Khair.

Waalaikum salam Dr,
My apologies for not replying with my opinions. Have read them and found them to be true. Have even asked my frens in Nestle Malaysia about some of the ingredients. i used to work in the Quality Assurance/Control Department in one of Nestle's factories. Interesting how much effort you put in to find out these facts. Syabas!! We need more dedicated Muslims like you. I have to learn to be at least 10% like you.
Thank you once again.

I think it would be easier to put things in laimans terms. Basically have the letters at the end as a reference. But make the first few pages for the haram products and then following it would be what is halal. Maybe, adding the latest info about the juicy fruit gum and burger king to your list would be good to since these are eaten more on a daily basis compared to some of the items on your list.
I hope this helps.

Calf Rennet Clarification:
Rennet per se, is not impermissible.
It is permissible to eat cheese which has rennet from calf rennet though
praiseworthy to refrain from due to a slight difference of opinion viz:
Is Whey Rennet Haraam? (no!)

From Dr Azam to Sobia Iqbal Waqar on 30 July 2007
Salam, Sobia,
I've sent you the HALAL INGREDIENTS REPORT in a seperate e-mail. I have heard it being lawful in Islam that all soaps, toothpastes, medicines etc. are halal because these products have been processed during manufacture, plus we do not take them into our stomachs as food. So, yes, all toothpastes would then be considered lawful. Keep in touch with your comments, requests etc.!

Wal ey kum as alam Dr Sahib.
Hope that you are well and things are going good for you. Yeah, its quite a comprehensive list, i've looked through most of it and it is quite interesting to note the vegetarian products. We have to be extra careful you see, I've seen vegetarian products containing alcohol a few years ago. so if its okay for vegetarians, it does not necessarily mean its okay for muslims. As you know English vegetarians drink alcohol because it is brewed from hops, barley etc, so its okay for them - but not us.
Interesting neverthless. I'll pass it on to a few of my friends its important we eat the right stuff.
Take care and hear from you again soon.

Comment No. 32 From Mohammed Amin Yasin on 24 July 2007 Assalam alaikum, of course I would like a copy if you could send it via
email or an e-book format that would help, have you consulted scholars
regarding the consensus about halaal/haraam food/drinks, also I have read that if people eat haraam food/drinks their prayers or any virtous deed for
the next 60 days is not acceptable to Allah, is that eating intentionally or
non-intentionally or doesn't it make a difference!!?? I havent read parables
of the quran!! If you could tell me more about the book I will try to read
it!! I also would like to ask if you are a qualified dream interpreter and
if I related some dreams if you could interpret them for me!!? or let me
know of someone suitable, I watch Khawaboon Ki Tabeer on DM Digital, M.A
Awaan is quite good, do you know of other dream interpreters becuase I am
from Bradford!!. Comment No. 33 From Mrs Asmak Ali on 25 July 2007

Comment No. 34 From Mubashir Inayet on 23 July 2007
So is this the burning question of the day for Muslims?
We need an Islam that works based more on practical deeds. We need an Islam that is unified, free of extremism, aware of corruption and exploitation, favouritsm, poverty, sectarianism. We need Muslims that can get on with their life by harnessing forces of nature for the benefit of mankind through technological research. We need an Islam that could free muslims of individuals seeking refuge in European countries and then while living there and enjoying freedoms they never had, conspiring to blow up people.
Those are the issues of the day. Infatuation with minor rituals shows our intellectual bankruptcy. Allah tells us in the Qur'an that the Jews got deeply involved with minor details in their way of doing things, which was termned as "punishment" for them.
The Muslims are not suffering because of being non-obersvant of rituals; they are suffering because of an intellectual paralysis.
Find ways and seek ways to get out of that gutter. If rituals alone was the secret to success, the Muslims would have been on top as they are the only ones who observe them.
Comment No. 35 From Hassaan S. Zahid on 23 July 2007
Jazaka’allah for all your efforts to increase Islamic knowledge, may Allah reward you, I have visited your site repeatedly and it has proved very informative, unfortunately the internet connections from Zimbabwe are extremely slow and unreliable so I may not be able to participate in some of your requests.
I really appreciate your efforts and applaud your enthusiasm Insha’Allah Allah will help you in your Endeavour’s.
The Halal product list would be helpful in purchasing decision making, if the ummah use’s their accumulated buying power we can pressure the manufacturers to produce more Halal products and services to increase availability.
Please forward me the list if readily available and Insha’Allah I will make the effort to distribute it to the Muslim community in Harare.

FROM DR AZAM TO MARYAM JON ON 21 JULY 2007
WA LAIKUM SALAM, SISTER MARYAM,
YOU ARE CORRECT AND YOUR MOTHER IS WRONG! ANY MEAT ON WHICH THE NAME OF ALLAH MOST HIGH IS NOT INVOKED IS HARAM! BUT WE CAN BUY & EAT MEAT FROM JEWISH STORES BECAUSE JEWS INVOKE THE NAME OF GOD ON THE MEAT THEY SLAUGHTER AND, LIKE MUSLIMS, THEY DO NOT EAT THE MEAT OF A PIG.
I HOPE MY HALAL INGREDIENTS REPORT HAS MADE YOU AWARE OF THE NEED TO CHECK INGREDIENTS OF E.G. SWEETS, CAKES & CHOCOLATES TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO GELATINE OR OTHER HARAM SUBSTANCES IN THEM, & THAT THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS; IF THEY ARE, THEY WILL ALSO BE SUITABLE FOR MUSLIMS!
MAY ALLAH BLESS YOU!
